Celtic should consider breaking transfer record on a centre-back

Our current transfer record stands at £9 million. That was the fee that enticed Odsonne Edouard to Celtic from PSG in 2018.

We haven’t even got close to equalling that since despite posting record profits with a healthy amount of cash reserves in the bank. Will we ever splash the cash that sees us break that record? It’s very doubtful with the ultra cautious mob currently running our club.

But we can only hope for change, and if that happens this summer hopefully we will part with some serious cash that sees us break our current transfer record. Naturally folk will want that sort of cash spent on a game changer. like a prolific scorer, just like Edouard was, or a creative playmaker, someone who can get bums off seats, like Lubo.

But the area that I would like to see get some serious cash thrown at it is in defence, mainly the centre back position. Yes we have CCV, but that’s it. Liam Scales is a squad player at best, as is Stephen Welsh. Gustaf Lagerbielke clearly doesn’t have a future at the club, and Maik Nawrocki while having great potential seems to made of glass.

If we were to invest in a top quality centre back to play alongside CCV it would make us more strong and compact at the back, especially on the European front. We’ve got to become harder to beat.

You’ve seen this season how important it is to have a solid backline. We’ve struggled in CCV’s absence which has been more than a few occasions this season. You only have to look at how more confident and fluent we are with Celtic’s Big Strong Man steadying the ship at the back this campaign. He makes the entire side tick. From the midfield to the strikers we seem to be more compact with a reliable and quality presence at the back.

We still need a midfielder with some presence, a quality striker and a left back, but spending most of our budget on a quality centre back would benefit us more greatly. Just think how good we’d be with a defender of similar quality of CCV at the back.

They do say good sides are built from the back after all. We are going to sign a new goalkeeper, let’s give him as much protection in front of him and make Celtic harder to beat.

Agreed although we have in fact came close to the money spent on Eddie and on a defender no less. Julllien.

  2. We are in the spl and champions league is getting harder to get a place init even winning your league won’t qualify you soon eufa will block all avenue for league winners when some leagues get four it devalue the cup and makes there leagues less compitive it’s not Celtic who has a massive world wide support cause they are stuck in spl they are nit allowed to be in Europe’s top cup where teams that have less than30,000 season book sales and would be hard to name in pub quiz but through tv money are allowed in finishing maybe 5th in there league

  3. Judging upon how Rodgers has structured the squad at present, I believe that we are looking at having 5CB within the squad again next season imo?
Weather Rodgers remains in charge for making the decisions is a totally different issue, but can’t see the structure of the squad changing regardless?
So potentially we have 5CB in place already with CCV, scales, rocki, Welsh and possibly lawal?
So to fit another CB into a 25 man squad would possibly mean that room has to be made for such a player, especially at the sums of money your talking about?
The obvious choice would be a replacement upon rocki with a stronger player than scales in the LCB role?
To keep the balance correct in the CB positions?
Wouldn’t disagree that improvements would benefit ourselves, just thinking that other positions will take and need preference before the CB positions are addressed imo?
The strongest relationship that’s needed within a team is that of a keeper and CBs?
That is already going to be tested with Joe Hart departing, and still haven’t forgotten the shambles of the 10iar season when we got that area of the team so badly wrong and the chaos that followed?

  4. Spending big money on players doesn’t guarantee they will be a success – barkas, ajeti and several others have flopped big time – the failures are down to the scouting system and slow reaction and stubbornness of our directors. There are plenty of Virgil’s and Frimpongs out there,it needs proper scouting and then snapping them up quickly before the price escalates out of our range which has happened on numerous occasions before.
