“Ahead of tomorrow’s match there will be one minutes silence in memory of Pope Francis,” Celtic SLO John Paul Taylor posted on social media this morning….

Celtic will have just under 3000 supporters at the game where a draw is all that is needed to secure another title for the club, the 13th in 14 seasons.

Dundee United, formerly Dundee Hibernian, the Tannadice club was formed in 1909. Originally known as Dundee Hibernian, the club changed to the present name in 1923. Like Hibernian in Edinburgh and of course Celtic, the club has strong roots in the Irish immigrant community to arrived in the city in the second half of the 19th century.

Like Celtic, Dundee United as never discriminated against any religion and with a sizeable Roman Catholic section within it’s own fanbase, they are probably the only club in the Scottish Premiership who could opt for a minute of silence rather than applause for Pope Francis.

The Celtic support of course will pay their respects

The Celtic support of course will pay their respects for such a great Pope and a wonderful human being. And the Celtic players will of course have their on memories of meeting Pope Francis in the Vatican to think about as they show their respects alongside the staff and management of Dundee United.

On Monday, after the sad news of Pope Francis passing, Celtic FC posted this short message on the official Celtic FC website:

Celtic Football Club would like to express its deepest condolences following the death of Pope Francis who has passed away this morning at the age of 88.

Everyone at the club is saddened by this morning’s news and we offer our sincere thoughts and prayers.

Requiescat in pace.

Expect this Rome style tribute to Pope Francis during tomorrow’s game at Tannadice. Dundee United fans are most welcome to join in.
