Celtic Stars on 45 – Wonderful first half performance blows Aberdeen away

CELTIC went to Pittodrie in what looked like the most difficult away fixture in the Premiership that we’ll face this side of the Winter break, and made no mistake on the back of the fine win over Lazio by wrapping up the points in a devastatingly perfect first half performance that simply blew Aberdeen away and had their supporters heading for the exits with less that 40 minutes played.

Celtic have now scored TEN goals without reply in the two league games since losing at Livingston and the intention now is to motor away from the Rangers who play Motherwell at Ibrox this afternoon knowing that Celtic are on top form.

Ten minutes in, Odsonne Edouard’s right footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner, goes in off the post after a supreme run and one two with James Forrest – a goal out of nothing made and executed by The Killer.

Five minutes later young Jeremie Frimpong combines with Edouard and gets the break of the ball as both Joe Lewis and the Aberdeen defender make a mess of things for the home side, the delighted Dutch star had a huge smile on his face as he touched the ball as it rolled towards the Aberdeen net. It’s his first Celtic goal but unlikely to be his last. A right back who is a right winger of some note.

On 37 minutes James Forrest made it three and this goal was the best of the lot, perhaps the best of the season so far. Brilliant work from Bolingoli on the left hand side, the ball found its way to Elyounoussi inside the box and he turned to set up Forrest who calmly found the bottom corner with Joe Lewis absolutely helpless.

The half-time whistle couldn’t come quickly enough for Derek McInnes but his side couldn’t even see this out without further mishap. Elyounoussi found space inside the box and his right footed shot while falling found the roof of the Aberdeen goal. James Forrest provided another assist with a decent cross.

Talking about Derek McInnes, a little bit of humour with this…

However there was absolutely no need for the Celtic support to resort to that Ibrox creation, the Cheer Up hatred song. No, no, no!

The second half was a draw, that in itself might actually cheer McInnes up, but Celtic dropped down a few gears and still had a handful of decent chances to add to the score, however it looked like the shooting boots were left in the dressing room at the interval.

So the Rangers now have to win 5-0 against Motherwell if they want to go to the top of the table this evening. Wonder if they’ll get more than the ONE minute that John Beaton added on today?

Neil Lennon pointed out afterwards that Tom Rogic is improving now he’s getting some game time and he also made the point that Ryan Christie, Olivier Nytcham and Mikey Johnston are all coming back after today and the next three home league games are at home.

Man of the Match? Take your pick, Elyounoussi and Bolingoli were excellent, Frimpong is a joy to watch, James Forrest was excellent but it really does have to go to Odsonne Edouard. A outstanding Celtic striker.

Celtic Women play the Rangers this afternoon, hopefully that’ll be another Beautiful Sunday. Come on you Ghirls in Green!
