Celtic target sent off for headbutting opponent

Celtic target Alexandro Bernabei has been sent off for headbutting an opponent. The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Celtic in the last few days with reports suggesting that a move was imminent. The Club Atlético Lanús left-back did start but he made it to the 69th minute before he was given his marching orders. However, his blushes were saved when Acosta netted the winner after 85 minutes.

Some are suggesting that Bernabei’s attempt to connect with the opponent was harsh but it appears that there is contact and the referee made the right decision. It is a rash moment for Bernabei and one which you would have hoped he may have been smarter about, presumably with the knowledge that Celtic are watching him.

Arguably, Bernabei has acted under provocation as the Colón player clearly slaps him and repeatedly fouls him in the lead up to the sending off.

If Celtic pursue the full-back, he will have a period of suspension to contend with and you would hope that the club take this into account when deciding the date of Bernabei’s signing. It might be a case of waiting until the player serves his suspension in Argentina before bringing him to Paradise. Given that Celtic do not have the Champions League Qualifiers this year, there is no longer a need to get the player in the door ASAP.
