Celtic’s Europa League rivals in turmoil as manager reveals fury over financial issue

It’s starting to become fairly clear that Cluj caught Celtic at the perfect time for their Champions League success.

At that point Bolingoli was really struggling so it meant Callum McGregor playing as a left back, while the team hadn’t really gelled properly and looked weak defensively. Now we can see that Celtic dominated them in the most recent encounter and will be confident of a result in Romania.

It’s not to say they haven’t had some good results, but most teams would fancy their chances against Rennes when they are down to nine men too.

Reports are starting to emerge that all is not well with Cluj. Financial issues seem to be rife in Romanian football with clubs going under and accusations of unpaid wages and bonuses.

Cluj have demonstrated they like to be active with their chat on social media, but a recent story in The Sun shows they don’t have quite the same enthusiasm for actually playing their players.

Lenny and Petrescu

Their manager Dan Petrescu has heavily criticised the club for not paying the players their bonuses and seems to indicate it’s having an adverse effect on the team.

The former Chelsea man said: “It’s a delicate subject and it seems to be a problem in Romanian football everywhere. I just hope our club management resolve this issue soon.”

He then added: “If you want to motivate players, you offer them financial bonuses. That’s how football works around the world, so it’s not a good position.”

Much happier scenes from the recent encounter

The Romanians are in a great position to go through after two wins from their first three games, but this does suggest they might not be in the best frame of mind for the upcoming games.

It might come down to their home game with Celtic to see who goes through to the next round. Wouldn’t it be lovely to see some fairly quick revenge?
