Video – Frimpong’s favourable comparison with Maestro and KT

JEREMIE FRIMPONG has received some amazing and well deserved reviews for his three senior appearances as a professional footballer. It all started against Partick Thistle in the League Cup quarter final where he got the Man of the Match, then he started against Ross County last weekend to make his home debut in the league and again he was outstanding.

But an away game at Pittodrie against a big, strong and physical Aberdeen side was surely not going to be the occasion for Neil Lennon to through the summer signing from Manchester City into? With three quality right backs at the club surely the Celtic manager would go for one of the two more experienced players? We reckoned that he’d play Moritz Bauer as Elhamed had put in a huge effort in the win against Lazio, but Lenny had faith in young Jeremie and boy did he not let the gaffer down!

There was an interview in Celtic Fans TV afterwards when a Celtic supporters, who must be in his 50s as he talked about being at Pittodrie for Paul McStay’s debut in the early 1980s (he said 1981 but it was actually on 30 December 1982).

I was there too. Celtic lost a goal in the opening minutes and it was looking like another long and tough trip to the North East. In those days we had a decent side but so did Aberdeen and there are plenty of memories of going up there and taking a beating.

Not that day though. After Aberdeen’s early opener Paul McStay began to shine and had the support buzzing, leading us to a 3-1 win – he scored the third goal and we all knew we had a player on our hands.

Another comparison made by our 50 something supporter at Pittodrie yesterday was to Kieran Tierney, who of course left Celtic in the summer to join Arsenal in a £25million transfer after coming through the youth system at Celtic. Like Paul McStay he was homegrown.

Listen to the comparison by the chap at Pittodrie yesterday. Some may say it’s way over the top but at this stage ie having played three games I’d say that Frimpong is up there with Paul McStay and already ahead of Kieran Tierney.

Could he actually be the best young player we’ve seen at Celtic since the early 1980s? Time will tell. He’s certainly on the right path. An excellent interview from Celtic Fans TV, well worth watching…
