Celtic’s first of 41 trophies this Century opened the floodgates

The first trophy of a staggering honour tally this century was started a quarter of a century ago today. We are without a doubt Scotland’s premier club. No other club, dead or alive, comes close…

How time flies

How time flies! 25 years ago today Celtic lifted the League Cup at Hampden Park following a 2-0 victory over Aberdeen thanks to goals from Vidar Riseth and Tommy Johnson.

It was a frustrating season of mostly doom, gloom and constant uncertainty due to the diabolical reign of John Barnes who was dismissed the month prior when the disastrous Scottish Cup home defeat to Inverness Caley Thistle proved to be the tipping point in his short unconvincing spell in charge.

Barnes’ mentor and Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish took temporary charge and steered the Hoops to this Hampden success and at least gave us something to celebrate in an otherwise bleak campaign.

Celtic’s first honour of the 21st century

It was the club’s first honour of the new century, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last. That trophy would prove to be the first of a staggering 41 honours won by the club this century. A century that’s only in its first quarter. Nine championships in a row, six trebles, four in succession, are just some of the impressive feats achieved by our ‘fairytale’ football club.

Achieved with cheating, dodgy tax schemes, hidden side letters and stiffing creditors

‘Over 60 players managers directors and ex managers getting tax free money to gain a sporting advantage over every other member team and no one wants to know about it. Disgraceful attitude from any governing body not to want this looked into.’

It was all achieved without resorting to dodgy side-letters with unaffordable players, crooked boardroom antics, unlawful tax scams and stiffing creditors for up to £100m from a face-painter and the local newsagent to HMRC.

And had Scottish football authorities followed their own rules Celtic’s trophy haul would have been higher along with numerous other clubs cheated by Rangers FC, now liquidated. It’s remarkable that they still regard themselves as Rangers FC but want nothing to do with those unpaid debts.

About Author

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.
