Celtic’s recruitment chief Nicky Hammond spent yesterday watching Declan Gallagher play for Motherwell against St Mirren, according to reports. The Head of Football Operations is tasked with finding talent in his remit and this took him to Paisley as Graham Alexander had his first game in the dugout.
The game finished 1-1 but in the aftermath of the game, The Scottish Sun reported that Hammond was there watching Gallagher. On the day that Celtic seemingly missed out on Filip Benkovic, who looks set to move to Leicester’s sister club in Belgium, Celtic are desperately needing a new central defender and Gallagher appears to be on the list.
Gallagher, 29, started his career at Celtic before moving to Clyde then Dundee before Livi. An off-field incident probably hampered any hopes of Gallagher reaching the top of the game but through hard work, he has moved onto become an integral part of the Scotland National Team under Steve Clarke.
Celtic are in need of a new central defender with Christopher Jullien ruled out for at least four months with a knee injury and had been linked heavily with Benkovic. However, The Daily Mail is reporting that the Croatian defender is set to make the switch to Belgium – despite Celtic’s interest.
