Chris Sutton on Danny Rohl whinging about Celtic’s stonewall penalty

Chris Sutton has criticised Danny Rohl, accusing him of complaining unnecessarily about the stonewall penalty awarded to Celtic during yesterday’s 2-2 draw at Ibrox…

Celtic drew level late on after a VAR intervention led to a spot-kick being given for handball against Dujon Sterling inside the penalty box. The incident occurred when Daizen Maeda’s close-range header struck the defender’s arm before Jack Butland made the save.

Referee John Beaton was instructed to review the footage on the pitchside monitor, and after looking at the replay he correctly decided to award the penalty.

Reo Hatate eventually converted, scoring at the third time of asking after Butland saved both the original penalty and the immediate follow-up, only for the midfielder to turn in the rebound.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Rohl said: “I think with both goals we have a lot of players in our box, but we are not really man-marking in these moments. The 2-2 is maybe a pen, but of course, lucky in the momentum at the last minute to get such a situation against you, but it’s football.

“Maybe, maybe not [whether it was a penalty], I think it’s not my part. The important thing is that you have a good decision-making. Today it was against us, last week it was against us, but this is football.

“I think at first you make the fantastic save, and then if you want it’s also a little bit lucky that it comes exactly at this point to the opponent’s back, not on the side or something like this.

“Then you make the second save and then the third one is in. I think all in all it’s tough to take today because when the equaliser comes so late, in the game especially, then also with the pen, you have to take it today.”

Responding to Rohl’s comments on X, Sutton said: “Danny Rohl whinging about Celtic being awarded the penalty is something else…”

Sutton added: “A game of two half’s!! Extraordinary game… Reo Hatate may have sulked all season but he showed what a top player he can be.”

“Outstanding performance and he gave Celtic control. Fair play to him. Martin pro active with his subs and that was key. Great recovery from Celtic.”

The penalty given was a stonewaller but have a look at the Definitive Ratings below and there are THREE other Celtic penalty claims that were completely ignored including a carbon copy of the offence that saw Auston Trusty see red after a VAR review last weekend against Hibs. Have a look…
