Confirmed – Celtic to play Legia Warsaw in Holy Goalie Tribute Match

Celtic will travel to Poland next month to play Legia Warsaw in special match to honour former Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc. The game will take place on Wednesday 20 July and will be the first meeting of the sides since the controversial European qualifier at Murrayfield on 6 August 2014.

Despite winning the second leg of the Champions League qualifier 2-0 – to give the Polish champions a 6-1 aggregate win, Celtic progressed due to Legia bringing on a substitute who was suspended.

UEFA awarded Celtic a 3-0 win meaning that the Scottish Champions progressed to the next round winning 4-3 on aggregate. Legia argued that Celtic should have conceded the tie although it didn’t;t do Celtic much good as we lost in the next qualifying round anyway! This year, thankfully we go straight into the Group stages of the Champions League.

Here’s the club’s media release issued just after 1pm…
