Elena Sadiku returns to Everton to sign Amy Richardson on a three year deal

Celtic FC Women have announced the signing of 18-year-old defender Amy Richardson, who joins the Celts from Everton’s youth setup on a three-year contract.

The youngster has plenty of promise, having spent some time in the Everton Academy and having trained with the first team on a few occasions. She also featured for Liverpool Feds in the FA Women’s National League North last season, earning herself some experience at senior level.

She has also represented her country at youth level, being called up for the Wales Under-19s.

Speaking on the new signing, the Celtic FC Women manager, and former Everton youth coach, Elena Sadiku said: “Amy is a really good young player who has the potential to become great with her skills and the mentality of being the best she can be every day.

“I have already coached her during my time at Everton so it’s going to be great to have her in the team and see her develop in our environment.”

It seems like Richardson’s main position is left-back, indicating that Elena may be giving a four-at-the-back another shot for the upcoming campaign. She tried to use this style when first arriving in Glasgow, but it didn’t go well as she lost her first two games against theRangers and Glasgow City. After those two bruising defeats, Elena quickly reverted back to what our current crop of players are best at, but is this a sign of imminent change?

That would also give Shannon McGregor a big role to play as with four defenders, we’d likely see three midfielders. McGregor could easily slot in to play alongside the many midfield partnerships we have at the club, so could more players to fit a system like this be coming through the door soon?

With Tash Flint option for Florida sunshine ahead of the midwinter delights out at Airdrie, Elena Sadiku will be looking at bringing in a striker as a top priority.
