Former Celtic man Jonny Hayes signs new Aberdeen contract

Jonny Hayes is set to prolong his stay in the Scottish Premiership after signing a new contract at Aberdeen on Thursday afternoon.

The Irishman joined Celtic in 2017 from the Dons after a top run of form at Pittodrie saw him become one of the league’s best players away from the Celtic Park contingent.

Arriving for £1million, Hayes only managed to become a bit-part player at Parkhead, though he will always be remembered fondly by the Boys in Green after scoring at Ibrox in September 2019. 67 games and just two goals later, the diminutive winger was firmly out of the picture in the east end with Ryan Christie, James Forrest, Moi Elyounoussi and even Mikey Johnston ahead of him in the pecking order.

A return to the north east returned, where he has impressed under various managers despite a couple of rough patches – but Hayes, in a touching message, stated that he is still seeing the best version of himself.

He told the club’s official website:

From a personal point of view I still feel as good as I have for the last few years so I’m happy to secure another year at the club.

The team is doing well at the moment and that’s the most important thing. The staff are working really hard behind the scenes, and I do believe if we keep moving in the right direction we can achieve a lot together.

Every game is important, the expectation to win games is always there at Aberdeen. The players really believe that, and they want to deliver success for the supporters.
