Former Celtic scout credited with Virgil van Dijk transfer emerges as Director of Football candidate

Obviously most of the headlines are taken by the coverage of who’s going to replace Neil Lennon, but it’s just as important to get a good Director of Football lined up.

There have been a few names mentioned without anything happening so far, and a report from HITC has indicated that former Celtic scout Neil McGuinness has been linked to the role.

He’s an interesting looking candidate as he’s built up plenty of experience since he left the club, but it’s also reported that he played a major role in the club signing Virgil van Dijk.

That proves that he’s able to spot a star in the making at a slightly lower level, but what about his experience in the DOF role?

The main relevance comes in the past couple of years where he’s been the Director of Scouting at MLS side Columbus Crew, and they have come from being one of the worst teams to one of the best in the league since his arrival.

He appears to be a person who’s continuing to impress as he takes on more responsibility and that does suggest that he could be ready to make the step up and take over as the DOF at Celtic, but it appears he’s just mentioned as a target just now and there’s no signs of an approach from the club so it’s one to keep an eye on.
