Greek Giorgos’ “Unbelievable story. He made headlines all over the world”

Celtic supporters are still waiting on the chance to see our likely lad Giorgos Giakoumakis makes his full debut For Celtic but that could happen as soon as this weekend at Fir Park. Ange Postecoglou must surely be tempted to give the Greek striker a start given that Kyogo has travelled to Saudi Arabia and Japan for World Cup action over the last week or so.

The Director of Football at his old club in Holland has been talking about the big striker who ended up as the to goalscorer in the Netherlands’ top division last season despite VVV Venlo being relegated. Whichever way you look at that Greek Giorgos’ achievement is pretty impressive and you would think he’d get more chances in the Scottish Premiership playing For Celtic than in the Eredivisie playing for strugglers VVV Venlo.
VVV-Venlo Director of Football Stan Valckx brought Greek Giorgos to Dutch football and certainly did not reject signing the big striker.

“Before I went to Poland to watch him in the flesh I had seen a few of his games on WyScout, and I saw that he never gives up,” Stan said, as reported by Glasgow Times. “He keeps running, he keeps fighting. He does very well in the box, he doesn’t need that many chances, but I didn’t see that immediately in the game in Poland. What was clear was his character.

“Just before half-time he got an elbow in the face and I saw the blood coming out of his head. I thought that there was no way he would be out for the second half, and now I wouldn’t be able to meet him the day after. I didn’t think he would show up, but he did.

“We hoped we would get what I saw in that game, but nobody at all expected the volume of goals he scored. At a small club like Venlo in the Eredivisie, a striker needs to defend maybe even more than he attacks, so that he scored that number of goals is really an unbelievable story. He made headlines all over the world.”

So we can forget French Eddie, even Polish Paddy and instead look forward to Greek Giorgos opening his account For Celtic at Fir Park on Saturday…now that would be nice!

  1. I have faith that this guy will prove to be a good signing. The footage I watched of him on youtube tells me that he’s a player. As soon as I seen Starfelt’s footage on youtube .. meant to be his highlights .. I knew we were in trouble before he kicked (or mis-kicked) a ball.
