Happy 42nd Birthday to ‘The King of Japan’ Shunsuke Nakamura

Japanese genius, Shunsuke Nakamura, turns 42 today. It’s hard to believe that the sensational winger, nicknamed “The King of Japan” by the Celtic support, is as old as that, however, it is even more surprising that he is still playing professional football in the J-League!

Nakamura represents one of Celtic’s best buys in the modern era, having signed for Celtic at a cost of just £2.5m. During his time at Parkhead, Naka made 166 appearances, scoring 33 goals and winning three league titles, a Scottish Cup and two League Cups.

Nakamura became an instant fan favourite with his sensational free kicks, making him one of the best set piece takers in the world. It was from such situations that he scored at Old Trafford, then did likewise to give Celtic an incredible 1-0 victory over the Red Devils at Paradise in the return fixture. When Celtic needed a last gasp goal to win the league title at Rugby Park, Naka was once again on hand to find the net with a stunning free kick.

Aside of his free kick taking abilities, Nakamura was a technically gifted player who brought much to the team. He will forever be remembered as a superb Celt and along with those free kick memories, few could forget his outrageous swerving half volley against Rangers as victory saved Celtic’s season during a campaign that saw the league trophy return to Paradise against all the odds.

We wish Shunsuke all the best!
