Happy Birthday – Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis is 28 today

Today marks the birth day of Celtic striker Girogos Giakoumakis. The big man turns 28-years-old and is hitting his prime years with the Hoops in line to benefit from this. The centre-forward is an instinctive penalty box attacker and has hit six goals so far this season; including a dramatic last-minute winner against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park back in October.

Last season, Ange Postecoglou shelled out £2.5 million to bring the Greek international from VVV-Venlo in the Dutch Eredivisie. He finished joint-top goalscorer in the 2021/22 campaign, finishing level with Ross County’s Regan Charles-Cook on 13 goals a piece.

There have been murmurings this year that the striker is unsettled due to not having his wage demands met during new contract talks with the Hoops heirarchy. However, it has been revealed that they are set to recommence along with Josip Juranovic.

Giakoumakis is an absolute gem of a player to have in the squad competing with Kyogo for that central striking spot. The player is a predator in the box and during scrappy games has the ability to hold the ball up extremely well, consequently bringing his teammates into play in the process.

Hopefully the issue is resolved as Giorgos is too good an asset to let leave right now. Both him and Kyogo bring out the best in one another and it’s crucial we maintain that competition for places at such a high standard.

Celtic wished our number 7 a Happy Birthday on social media today, along with some stats from his season so far…

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
