Highland Paddy – The build up to that day in Lisbon

We have all saw the many wonderful images from that famous day on 25 May in 1967.

However there was work to be done in the build up before the Lions made history.

Before heading to Portugal, Jock Stein had to pick up his brand new Ford Zephyr from Skelly’s garage on Cumbernauld Road!

Once they had landed in Lisbon, it was only natural that they would visit the Estadio De Nacional to take in the surroundings.

It wasn’t all hard work though, as this picture shows some of the players relaxing during some down time.

There was work to be done though with Ronnie Simpson practising his handling.

Bobby Lennox would do some ball work.

Jimmy Johnstone would work on his close control and dribbling in the hope that it would unlock the defence of Inter Milan.

Just as importantly, Jock Stein would keep an eye on Tommy Gemmell as he practiced his shooting.

You wonder if the players, after their last training session, knew what was before them.
