‘Holy Goalie’ Artur Boruc opens up on ‘scary letters’ received in the post after Old Firm antics

Former Celtic star Artur Boruc has opened up on ‘scary’ threats he received in the post after he blessed himself as Ibrox and ran around on away turf with a Champions flag after taking the league title – and the mick – in Govan.

Police were involved, tempers flared and bonds were strengthened as Boruc etched himself into Celtic folklore with his incidents in the blue half of Glasgow.

One such incident was when Boruc ‘blessed’ himself in front of an irate 50,000-strong crowd, which brought about police action and another fresh wave of sectarian debate amongst the bitter rivals.

And Boruc, in an interview with Football Scotland, has opened up to the sickening abuse – claiming that the posted mail added to the opinion that some of the Glasgow derby ‘is not the best’.

It’s a good memory for me, nothing too bad happened with it so I will always remember it,” Boruc said of the blessing incident and winding theRangers fans up.

There were a couple of moments that were a little bit more scary, but like I said I wasn’t thinking about it that much as I was young and trying to enjoy myself and enjoy where I was. I didn’t really go through that.

I remember Neil Lennon was sent bullets in the post. I got a few scary letters but you can’t fully understand how frightening it could get because it’s just a letter.

I probably didn’t put too much attention onto it which is why I didn’t react. I do understand rivalry but that’s the other side of football in Glasgow, it’s not the best.”

Boruc played his final 45 minutes of professional football against Ange’s men yesterday in a 2-2 draw vs Legia Warsaw, conceding goals to Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda.

The Pole was the clapped off by both sets of fans in the final minute as he came back onto the pitch to call an end to his career at 42 years of age. Not many can say they’ve done that…
