“I am surprised” – pundit thinks Celtic player shouldn’t be involved against Leverkusen

He is one of Celtic’s more forgotten summer signings, but Giorgos Giakoumakis is supposedly in with a chance of playing against Bayer Leverkusen later tonight.

The £3million signing from VVV-Venlo, who joined Celtic late on in the window, has fallen under the radar a bit in recent weeks with Kyogo Furuhashi’s superb arrival and his injury.

But with Albian Ajeti not really firing and Furuhashi injured, there is a huge void up front.

And it is one that Giakoumakis – although Davie Provan doesn’t believe it is the right time if the Greek is likely to increase his injury chances.

I have got to say I am surprised that Giakoumakis is in the frame at all,” Provan said to the Go Radio Football Show.

A calf injury is quite similar to hamstring, you can’t really take any chances with it as you are not really sure when it is going to go again.

Normally, you will give yourself an extra week when you feel okay to make sure that you are okay.

I am surprised that he is in the frame for tomorrow evening [tonight].”

Provan has a point; there is already a real lack of squad depth at Celtic due to injuries.

Callum McGregor, James Forrest, Kyogo Furuhashi, Christopher Jullien – the list goes on and on in terms of those who are unavailable for the Leverkusen game.

And there is no reason to risk playing another contentious player in the game against Leverkusen when the league is quite literally slipping away from Celtic if they don’t book their ideas up.
