Leverkusen chief makes revealing Celtic admission

Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen feel they already have a brilliant gauge on how Celtic will try and play against them in tonight’s Europa League clash – after keeping tabs on the Hoops for months when they were scouting Jeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong joined Leverkusen in the winter transfer window for a fee of £11million, but now plies his trade in west Germany after impressing at Celtic Park.

And Sporting Director Simon Rolfes has let on that he knows a lot about the current Celtic side after scouting them intensely for months.

“We have watched Celtic in the last years, we signed Jeremie Frimpong from Celtic, we were interested in a player from Celtic in this summer. So we followed Celtic a lot in the last years,” Rolfes said.

“They had very good international games, against AC Milan for example.

“I watched that game and I think it’s a strong team. You could see that in the first game against Betis. It was a really interesting game.

“With the fans now coming back, our last European international game before the lockdown with spectators was against Rangers… it was a fantastic atmosphere there.

“We hope to come to Scotland and win again, after the lockdown.”

With the injuries currently afforded to Celtic, it is common knowledge to think that this could happen more than a Celtic win.

But with a first European group crowd at Celtic Park since the 3-1 win over Rennes in November 2019, there will undoubtedly be a certain demographic who are well up for the game – the 57,000+ Celtic fans in attendance.

Yes, the odds may be against the Celtic side, but those odds will be significantly reduced with the level of support on offer.

Let’s hope Ange’s men can do it…
