“I love that club”: Former Celtic hero shows desire for Parkhead return before retirement

It’s always tempting for a club to bring a former hero back when they get a chance, but the timing this season wasn’t right for Victor Wanyama to come back to Celtic.

Neil Lennon already had a settled midfield base of Callum McGregor and Scott Brown, so Wanyama would’ve had to break that pairing up or come in as a rotation option.

When you also consider that he was on Premier League wages and Spurs may have been looking for a transfer fee, it just didn’t make sense.

He ended up going to MLS to play for Montreal Impact, but it sounds like he’s not closed the door on returning to Glasgow at some point soon.

The Daily Record reported on some of his comments to The Athletic, and it’s clear he wants to play for Celtic again:

“But I want to play for Celtic again before I finish. I have unfinished business there. I love that club.”

It will be interesting to see if that ever happens, he’s 28 years old and you have to think he will spend a few years in MLS, so it might even be the case that Celtic won’t need him when he becomes available again either.

Due to the MLS calendar he could even end up as an emergency loan for a couple of months one Winter if Celtic need a short term fix, but a return looks unlikely for a couple of seasons.

Perhaps his name will pop up again when Broony retires and they need a replacement, but it’s always a good thing to see a former player who still has so much love for the club.
