“I think it’s unnecessary, I don’t agree with it,” Neil Lennon

I’ll always have had huge admiration and respect for former Celtic captain and twice manager Neil Lennon…

He’s a Celtic man who brought nothing but success to our club as both player and manager, and he’s quite rightly regarded as a legendary figure in the club’s unbroken history, but his latest comments, leave a lot to be desired, and I reckon are severely wide of the mark.

Lenny has spoke up in defence of the Celtic board, which isn’t really surprising to be honest, giving his tightness with serval of those in a position of power at the club. After all it’s mostly the same faces who gave him his big break in management, and re-hired him on a second occasion, so he’s obviously going to have their backs.

Although, I’m pretty sure Lenny left first time around due to a number of reasons, one of them being something we can all relate too, and that’s of course his frustrations to get the players he desired to take the club forward.

Neil usually talks a lot of sense, but not on this occasion. As Celtic fans unite behind the recently formed Celtic Fans Collective with a new series of protests starting this morning after a full meeting of the representative members last night, the former Celtic boss has spoken out against the protests.

“I think it’s unnecessary, I don’t agree with it,” Lenny said, as reported by Scottish Sun. The former Celtic manager went onto praise Celtic’s largest shareholder Dermot Desmond saying: “Dermot is a genius, for me. Not just from a sporting point of view, but an intellectual point of view.

“He’s very successful, hugely successful, probably the most successful man I’ve ever come across, in terms of what he’s earned and generated and built in his career.

“He’s on an intellectual level of no one else I’ve ever come across. He is very forward thinking, always looking to the future. He is very proactive, I have to say, in supporting Irish sportsmen, whether it be football, golf or Gaelic football. He loves his sport and he loves Celtic.”

And on Peter Lawwell Lenny said: “Peter is not only a great administrator but very astute.
I fell out with him loads of times, as you would do, over deals or contracts or whatever. But everything he did was for the betterment of Celtic Football Club.

“Every deal, every decision made, the club always came first.”

Neil Lennon added: “I think they’ve brought great success. They’ve fought many battles for the club — many battles they’ve won against the odds. I just think the success the club has had since 2000 has been incredible. The amount of titles, Champions League, the Uefa Cup final, player trading, the money the club has, how well-run and sustainable the club is.

“The health of the club is what they think about going forward. They know they’re not going to be there forever, but what they’ve achieved on and off the field, it’s incredible.

“There’s no way Martin O’Neill, Brendan Rodgers, Gordon Strachan, managers of this ilk, would have come to Celtic if it hadn’t been for Dermot. No way, honestly.”

I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. Gordon Raeburn on

Legendary ? He was mostly responsible for losing 10 in a row along with his pals on the board.!!

  2. Steve staunton on

    I despise Neil Lennon.

To this day he still flaunts himself as a PLC yes man which is why he was brought back for a second stint in charge.

He will be forever known as the man who threw away the 10.

The absolute irony that the headline is what the vast majority thought about his return as manager. Which time would go on to prove…

  3. Lennon is trying to get a foot back in the door by endearing himself once again to the Celtic hierarchy. This is just the kind of guy the board like as he can be easily manipulated and kept on board by carefully selected words of praise.
Lennon’s use of the word intellectual is absolutely laughable. I doubt he has ever come across and recognised real intellectuals. Desmond is certainly not one of them, although he does have a sharpness about him with respect to making money.

  4. I doubt Lennon has ever met an intellectual, never mind recognising one.
This is him simply angling for a return.
