“I’d have regretted it”: Former Celtic midfielder on why he chose to leave Parkhead for the Premier League

Scottish football fans are familiar with players looking to move down south at the first opportunity, but you do sometimes have to wonder about certain moves.

Playing for Celtic offers the chance to win trophies and compete in Europe, so that will be the pinnacle of a lot of careers.

We’ve seen a lot of players trade that for mediocrity down south. Beyond the money, it’s hard to see the attraction of battling to stay in a division and being outplayed most weeks, so these comments from Stuart Armstrong offer an explanation.

Armstrong developed into a great player towards the end of his time at Celtic. He arrived at the same time as Gary Mackay-Steven and it looked like his career might go a similar way, but his improvement was remarkable and he did earn the move.

He eventually moved to Southampton, and The Daily Record reported on some of his comments:

“The decision to leave was a tough one but if I didn’t pursue my dream to reach the Premier League then I’d have regretted it.”

So it sounds like a childhood dream that needed to be fulfilled rather than looking at the reality of the situation, but you can’t blame someone for wanting to avoid regrets and following that dream.

The way the Premier League is talked about and marketed you have to think that kind of attitude will only continue for years to come, but opinion will always be split over how wise the decision is.
