‘I’m enjoying playing football’ – Banana-free Broony could play on to forty

CELTIC play Motherwell this evening at Fir Park and that’s where our focus needs to be, rather than the on-going dark arts PR fiasco that has being blowing up across the city.

Three points tonight in yet another tough away fixture will take Celtic a step closer to the Nine and you can imagine the tension in the air at Ibrox if Hibs put in a decent shift against Steven Gerrard’s side who have dropped five points since returning from the winter break.

Celtic are seven points clear and while we’d settle for that at 10pm this evening there is always the chance that things could go either way, the twist and turns in the title race have all gone our way in 2020 and it that continues tonight our lead could increase to as much as ten points.

All that PR fuelled controversy seems to have done nothing more than affect themselves and widen their chances of winning the league. Yesterday Scott Brown and Neil Lennon held pre-match Media Conferences but the media focus – and indeed ours – was elsewhere.

Back to the bread and butter though, and that means picking up another three points at Fir Park. “We just worry about one game at a time,” Broony said. “There’s an excellent bunch of lads in the dressing room, we thrive off the games and look forward to them. We have Motherwell tomorrow and we look forward to playing these kind of games.

“Motherwell always attack and squeeze the park well. They have a good manager and it’s always a hard place to go,” Broony noted. Watch his Media Conference below…

Broony revealed he wasn’t even aware that he’d reached his 700th competitive game landmark at Hamilton and simply is hopeful of playing one more. One game at a time, the way Celtic win titles.

“Hopefully I’ll get 701 and then I’ll just take it from there,” said the 34-year-old Celtic captain said, noting that Gordon Strachan likes to remind him that he played until he was 40. He joked about Strachan once telling Jamesy Forrest that he managed that by eating two bananas a day and revealed that the Celtic winger is still doing just that as a result!

“It’s a great milestone to reach. I’ve enjoyed every single moment of it. I didn’t even know it was my 700th until after the game.

“I’m enjoying playing football. I’m as fit as I have been for a long while. Brendan changed a few things and Neil’s come in and made sure I can keep ticking over.

“That’s the way you have to go, especially as you get older you’re playing catch-up with all the younger ones. You need to be prepared to play all the games here. We’ll have over 60 games again this season, so it’s about maintaining your body and making sure you recover from the games.”

We like to feature some of the comments that are posted below the video that is posted on Celtic’s You Tube channel, so here goes…

“Broony being wheeled out for a lot of these lately. I like it – doesn’t suffer fools gladly and swats away poor questions. Let’s the rest of the bhoys focus on training. Brilliant captain,” Tony Paterson stated.

“700 games and counting, Captain Fantastic, a true inspiration to everyone at Celtic Park,” Joseph Maxwell added.

“What a player, what a captain a Celtic legend,” Robbie Dinning noted.

“Questions would make a lemon wince…” complained Doogie.

“Never thought I’d say it when he first signed but what a player, captain and leader of Celtic over the years, a living legend, make it 800 and beyond Broony, gon yersel sir,” Daydreamer Beat lover wrote.

“Broony you’re class. A proper leader. Up there as the most decorated trophy winning captain in history of Scottish football.” Stevie Boy stated.

And there’s much more of that kind of appreciation for the Celtic captain. We should enjoy him as much as possible while we still can. Could Broony play until he’s forty? He might fancy giving it a go…
