‘It just wasn’t our season’, admits Neil Lennon as he discusses return to dugout

Neil Lennon has admitted that he had a brilliant second stint at Celtic, even if it ended by Lennon resigning as the league looked all but over. Speaking on 5Live tonight, Lennon was commentating on Celtic’s Europa League conquerers AC Milan in their draw at Old Trafford. The 49-year-old confirmed that he would be looking for a return to management but admitted that it wasn’t Celtic’s season this year as the club passed up the opportunity to win 10IAR.

“Yes, absolutely. Listen, I had a brilliant time at Celtic. It just wasn’t our season this season.

“But the players have achieved incredible things up there in the last sort of five or six years. It was a real privilege.

“I’ve had a bit of a break, stayed in the house like everybody else is doing at the minute. But I’m sure I’ll get the itch sooner rather than later.”

In truth the decision to part-ways with Lennon should have been taken sooner but it is good that the Irishman has some perspective on his exit and is looking at a return to management. Lennon became the first person to win a treble as a player and a manager with Celtic, cementing his place in the club’s history.

Lennon has won ten titles with Celtic, eight Scottish Cups and three league cups in two spells as manager and one as a player. He will always be a Celtic legend but it was clear that his time as manager was up. Lennon will be recognised for all that he has done for the club but it may take some time as this season has been incredibly tough for everyone involved.

The former captain and manager said the club would always have a place in his heart even if the end of his second stint at the club was acrimonious.

“Well I had 20 years sort of player, coach and manager so a huge part of my life.”
