Jim Craig’s 7am start: Not a bad start to an illustrious Celtic career

After a career embracing Dunipace Juniors, Morton and Middlesbrough, Neilly Mochan joined Celtic on this day in 1953.

24 hours later, Neilly was in the team which beat Queen’s Park 3-1 in the final of the Charity Cup, in front of a crowd of 40,600 at Hampden, with the new boy getting a goal in each half.

Seven days after that final, Neilly was back at Hampden again – and scored again – this time in the semi-final of the Coronation Cup against Manchester United, with 73,000 watching; and returned four days later, this time for the final of the Coronation Cup against Hibs, when he scored a wonder goal from – depending on whose recollections you rely on – anything from 25 yards to 40 yards.

It was not a bad start to an illustrious Celtic career.
