John Collins interested in Celtic return with Director of Football role

John Collins has stated that he is interested in a return to Celtic with the widely reported Director of Football role. The 53-year-old told BBC Sportsound that he had the qualities to excel in the role as well as his own relationship with the club.

“I believe I’ve got the skillset. Of course it would be of interest to me.

“Celtic’s played a big part of my life but I know there’s a lot of experienced people in for the job.”

Names like Fergal Harkin, Matteo Tognozzi and David Webb have been linked with the DOF role. However, Collins himself could be a worthy candidate in the new scouting set-up at the club, he has a modern European approach to football that could be a valuable asset under a new DOF. Although he may not have the experience as a Director of Football to take on what is quite a sizeable role. Harkin appears to be the favourite for the role, utilising the relationships he forged with Manchester City to recruit players with Celtic.

The Celtic Star’s Niall J did a brilliant article, detailing Collins’ credentials for the role and how he may operate. You can read that here.

Collins joined Celtic in 1994 for £1m. During what were dark times, McStay and Collins were a bright spark in the central midfield for Celtic but sadly in that period only had a Scottish Cup in ’95 to show for his efforts. He left the club in controversial circumstances in 1996 when he left on a free transfer for Monaco.

He left us after telling Tommy Burns and Fergus that he was staying and we got nothing for him when we were desperate for funds for on and off the park. Only interested in Celtic when he’s not working.
