Just what the doctor ordered, Mikey Johnston set to return

Mikey Johnston is on the training pitch again after suffering an injury during a pre-season game to Charlton Athletic.

The tricky winger has bags of potential, but is forever on the sidelines with various injuries. His latest malady robbed Celtic of crucial squad-depth that helped squander yet another chance of Champions League qualification.

Johnston, who is still only 22, was pictured training with the first team at Celtic Park yesterday, as Ange Postecoglou puts his preparations together ahead of the Europa League tie in Spain.

Towards the end of last season the Scottish winger had begun to find form again, ultimately being one of a few plus points on an otherwise dreadful season.

With the news that Celtic have yet more squad issues, the return to training of Johnston is a welcome boost for Ange and his backroom staff. Over the next few weeks we will face various tests of endurance on multiple fronts, and need as many of our talented players as possible. Johnston certainly fits that bill. His ability to take the ball under pressure and also run with it at his feet, is a major weapon in the Celtic arsenal.

With Karamoko Dembele also sidelined, the need for depth on the wings has never been more prevalent. The arrival of Johnston back into the fold could be just what the doctor ordered.

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

  1. Wish I could remember a game where Johnstone played well. A ghost who gets better with his neverending absences.
