Liverpool superstar Virgil Van Dijk recalls Celtic humbling

Liverpool superstar and former Celtic defender Virgil Van Dijk has recalled a difficult encounter in the Hoops as he was asked what his favourite away ground was. The Dutch Internationalist spoke to Gary Neville’s Overlap podcast and answered 19 questions with the Man Utd legend-turned-pundit.

Van Dijk recalled a humbling that occurred at the home of the Spanish giants as he was helpless to stop the Catalan side from scoring six goals into Fraser Forster’s goal. Virgil was partnered with Efe Ambrose for Neil Lennon’s team.

“That’s a difficult one to be fair but I would say Camp Nou, Barcelona. I watched a lot of Barcelona games when I was younger so to be able to play there with Celtic the first time – to get beat 6-1 was tough! – but to be able to play there was a big one for me.”

The Dutchman has since gone on to be one of the best defenders in world football having won the Champions League and all domestic honours with Liverpool.

Van Dijk won two Premiership titles in Glasgow, as well as the League Cup under Ronny Deila but he also played European football, Champions League group stages in 2013 and Europa League Last 32 the following year. A £12m move to Southampton followed and two years after that, Van Dijk became the most expensive defender in the world after a £75m move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Celtic will look to gain a result against Barca’s fierce rivals next month in the final Champions League group-stage match. However, they will need to beat Shakhtar Donetsk tonight under the lights at Paradise.
