‘Luckily, she had safety pins and a badge of the Pope, to keep my trousers intact,’ Tam Boylan

We have been enjoying the stories of Celtic supporters during the international borefest. It’s not long now – Celtic play on Saturday!

One of the things we’ve been doing on The Celtic Star is our Celtic supporters Q&A and we’ve had a few of the older supporters on today – which is fantastic as their stories are always wonderful!

If you want to take part in this Celtic supporters Q&A we’d love to hear from you. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, male or female, all that counts is that you support Celtic. Simply email editor@thecelticstar.co.uk and we’ll send you over the questions. Answer them and return with a few Celtic related photographs if possible – which we can use. We’ll do the rest.

Next up is Tam Boylan who tells a wonder story about how following Celtic allowed him to meet his wife!

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Tam Boylan, I’m originally from Craigneuk, Wishaw. I moved to London in the late 1960’s but I’m now retired and live in sunny Worthing on the south coast. I started a supporters club called Spirit of ’67 Worthing about five years ago and it’s going strong.

What does Celtic mean to you?
Life and death! Celtic has always been part of my life; from a small boy, when my uncle Frank took me to see my first game and lifted me over the turnstiles.

How long have you been supporting Celtic and can you remember much about your first ever game?
I have been a Celtic supporter from birth and I saw my first game when I was seven years old. The first game was at Fir Park and Charlie Tully was playing.

Who were your early Celtic heroes?
Heroes? Charles Patrick and Yogi Bear.

What’s your favourite Celtic song and why?
It’s a Grand Old Team – it sums up the club, the optimism of the support. I also like Willie Malley, as it’s our history. I saw the song being composed and sung by Jackie Stewart in the London Road supporters club.

How often to do you get along to the games these days and what’s your match day routine?
Not so often now, but usually four times a year. Match day? A good breakfast, start at the Tollbooth pub and then make my way up the Gallowgate, stopping at places like Sarry Heed, Bar 67, Hoops Bar etc…..

Have you traveled to an away day in Europe to see Celtic? If so can you tell us about your experiences?
Many away trips, to every part of the continent. Favourite is Barcelona at the Nou Camp. Experiences? Met Tims from all over the world.

If Celtic could have one Lisbon Lion in his prime playing for us now, which Lion would you choose to play?
Bobby Murdoch.

Other than being at the game, what else do you enjoy about a trip to see Celtic?
The pubs in the Gallowgate. I always meet people I know.

How do you think this season has gone so far and are you confident that it will be a successful one for the Bhoys?
Yes, we will be successful, after a shaky start. Brendan has my full confidence.

How do you think Brendan Rodgers compares to the former Celtic bosses you have seen manage the team?
Brendan is a great manager. The support are behind him but the media are trying to stir up trouble. He will be revered, the same as Martin.

Finally can you tell us a funny story about your time supporting the Hoops?
It’s how I met my lovely wife, Frances. Celtic were in a friendly competition in Rotterdam in September 1981 and I met her there. I was playing kick about and my trousers burst! Luckily, she had safety pins and a badge of the POPE, to keep my trousers intact.
