Martin O’Neill draws parallels to his and Ange Postecoglou’s debut seasons

Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill spoke to Clyde 1 Superscoreboard about this weekend’s Glasgow Derby and the Irishman said that he could see some parallels between the job that Ange Postecoglou inherited and his own situation back in 2000.

Both men came into the club with the campaigns before ending with Celtic languishing in second place by more than 20 points.

O’Neill took over in 2000 and quickly turned Celtic’s fortunes around, establishing a team that dominated the early 2000s against a financially-doped Rangers. O’Neill won 3 SPL Titles, 3 Scottish Cups and 1 League Cup while also leading Celtic to the UEFA Cup Final in Seville. The ex-Nottingham Forest man created a robust team, full of talent in every department.

Postecoglou, meanwhile, already has already secured his first trophy having beaten Hibs 2-1 in the League Cup Final back in December. He faces Rangers on Sunday in a game that could potentially decide the outcome of the league title. Then, a few weeks later, he faces Giovanni Van Bronkhorst’s side again at Hampden with a place in the Scottish Cup Final at stake.
