McAvennie Backs Celts for Cup but Makes Hilarious Claim

Frank McAvennie has tipped Celtic for the Betfred Cup when they meet Rangers next month. The former-striker was speaking to Open Goal’s Right in the Coupon with Si Ferry, Paul Slane and Derek Ferguson.

The Centenary Season hero, who scored a double in the final versus Dundee United in 1988, said how much he is looking forward to the final.

“I’m so looking forward to it because of that battle in midfield, the clash between Scotty Brown and Jack because I think he has stepped up a bit. Scotty’s got the experience and he’s still running up and down the park. Great enthusiasm and great energy.”

“If both teams turn up and play to the best of their ability, Celtic has the best squad.”

McAvennie also said that the return of Tom Rogic could push the cub on, especially given the amount of games coming up before the Winter Break.

“I’m a big fan of Rogic, him coming back – i think he’s different class, he never loses the ball in the midfield. He brings something different.”

However, Macca, 59, made a hilarious claim on the show about him being ahead of Scott Sinclair in getting a game for Celtic at the moment.

“He’s got options, with the boy from Southampton. I thought they would’ve missed Sinclair but I’ve got more chance of getting a game than Sinclair.”

Sinclair has made six appearances for Celtic this season and scored twice; however he has failed to get ahead of Elyounoussi, Hayes or Johnston. Last season, he made 63 appearances for the Hoops in all competitions.
