Newcastle United wanted to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers

Celtic signed Cameron Carter-Vickers on a loan to buy deal just before the Transfer Window slammed shut. The 23-year-old has been on loan at Bournemouth, Stoke and Luton Town but was never afforded the chance to breakthrough at Spurs. Newcastle United coach Graeme Jones worked with the player at a few of his loan spells and Spurs Correspondent Alasdair Gold (as reported by The Chronicle) said that the Magpies were interested in bringing the player to the North East.

“I know Newcastle were interested. They had a real think about bringing him in this window as well because I think it’s Graeme Jones who is at Newcastle, was also at Bournemouth and also (at Luton).

“I think he had him at both clubs and he was telling Newcastle, look, I think he could do a job but it didn’t happen in the end.”

The defender will be hoping to make an impression at Celtic and have the option to buy exercised on him. Celtic could have benefited from Newcastle’s hesitation to sign the former Catholic United youngster.

Celtic sold Kris Ajer with Carl Starfelt secured as a replacement in a £4.2m deal but given Christopher Jullien. Celtic need to reinforce a couple of key positions on Deadline Day with Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie departing and Jota and Giakoumakis arrived. 11pm came and went and it looked as if Celtic had completed all of their business only for a late deal to manifest for Carter-Vickers.
