On This Day: Double Derby Delight, Dalglish and Sutton’s Hat-trick

On This Day – 30 October…

Through the years, on this day, we have a number of different games to reflect on and thanks to @LilZe85, we can share some of them with you. There is double delight in the Glasgow Derby, albeit over a decade apart. Kenny Dalglish is at the double and Chris Sutton scores a questionable hat-trick in a win at Tannadice.

Rangers 1 Celtic 2 – 1993

“A nervy game, and Rangers actually took the lead through Ally McCoist. Frank Connor’s Celtic rallied and an equaliser not long after (John Collins) was completed with a late late winner (Brian O’Neil) to send our ranks into raptures. A great result and hopes were raised, but a long way to go in the season and there was much more in our squad to be rectified. A great result but not the end of it all.” The Celtic Wiki

Celtic 3 Rangers 2 – 1982

“Teenage prodigy and midfield maestro Paul McStay “shines like a lighthouse” in the words of manager Billy McNeill in a memorable Old Firm win in front of a record crowd for Britain’s league season.

Rangers led twice after bad Celtic defending on a wild and windy day and the turning point was when Prytz’s thunder bolt shot in the second half came off the bar and into Bonner’s arms.

Celtic equalised after McGarvey scored after brilliant play from young Paul McStay.

With only three minutes remaining Celtic grabbed the winner when they broke quickly after a Rangers corner. Nicholas cleverly held the ball and releeased it perfectly to MacLeod who ran 50 yards before scoring with a powerful shot.

MacLeod was so exhausted he could hardly raise his arms in celebration.” The Celtic Wiki

Dundee United 2 Celtic 4 – 2005

Chris Sutton had the ball in the net three times; however, the match ball didn’t leave Tannadice with the Englishman as he headed United into the lead. John Hartson and Stephen Pearson scored the others as Gordon Strachan’s side took all the points in Dundee.

Celtic 2 Motherwell 0 – 1976

A masterclass from Kenny Dalglish ensured victory for Celtic as the striker bagged himself a double versus Motherwell.
