‘Rangers will Implode,’ says Sutton

Chris Sutton has suggested that Rangers will implode if Celtic win the league this season, matching the Lisbon Lions’ record from the 1970s. The BT Pundit, who was promoting their coverage of the Betfred Cup semi-final clashes at Hampden this weekend, spoke to the Evening Times about how he feels this season will go.

The ex-Celt reckons that given the fact Gerrard has been backed by the board to deliver and finished empty handed last year, that will lead to Rangers imploding if they allow Celtic to continue the domination of Scottish Football.

“Whatever people say about Gerrard – and the team is improving as he has been given the money and given the players – he didn’t win a trophy last season. That’s not me giving him a kicking, it’s a fact.

“The longer that goes and if Celtic do win the first trophy, there will be a nervousness about Rangers. They couldn’t go down the stretch last season.

“If they don’t win something this season, the chances are they will implode because everything has been building so well.”

Gerrard came to Rangers banging the drum of upturning Celtic from the top of the Premiership and despite a challenge last season, a short stint on the top themselves, Neil Lennon and Celtic remain a huge obstacle to the Scouser’s success.

“But for Gerrard to come north and it’s a big deal with the profile of Scottish football and it has risen, but, ultimately, he needs to win something. That’s the pressure of managing Celtic and Rangers.”

Celtic face St Mirren tomorrow at Celtic Park whilst Rangers travel to Ross County.
