“One of the best”: Former club and international teammate urges Celtic to sign free agent this summer

Usually seeing your club being linked with a multitude of strikers would be an exciting thing, but it’s understandable that constant links will worry the Celtic fans.

Any new arrivals up front will ultimately mean that someone will need to make way, and there will be a fear that Odsonne Edouard could be sold.

Some of the potential targets sound more like back up options, which suggest Griffiths, Bayo or Klimala could be due to leave.

A recent report from HITC has looked at the possibility of Steven Fletcher joining on a free transfer, but that would only make sense if he’s a rotation option.

He’s 33 so he would be a short term fix, but he could also bring an aerial threat and some experience to the team, so there is some logic there.

It would probably be an underwhelming one for the supporters, but the report looks at some comments from Barry Bannan, who played with Fletcher for club and country.

It’s clear that he thinks he would be an excellent addition:

“Steven is one of the best strikers I’ve ever played with. He’s one of those players who, until you actually play alongside him, you don’t understand how good he is.!

“I thought before that with all the headed goals he scores, he was just a big striker type, but you play alongside him and realise he’s nothing like that. His ability with his feet is second to none and he is really the all-round striker.”

“It’s no-brainer to sign Fletch. Last season and a half, he was unbelievable.”

It’s always risky to trust the words of a long time teammate and friend because they are clearly trying to promote someone in the press that needs a transfer, but it does make it sound like he could be a useful addition.

Fletcher arriving would also suggest that Bayo would be the player to leave as it would see one physical player replace another, but there’s nothing to suggest a deal is close at this point.
