Opinion: Billy Sharp would be a great signing for Celtic

It is no secret that Celtic are looking for a striker this January. Odsonne Edouard has been brilliant again but he has not had any backup this season with Griffiths and Bayo failing to make an impact. The two have combined to score just 4 goals and thus it is evident that the Hoops need a new forward in order to provide some cover for the Frenchman.

According to The Guardian, the reigning Scottish champions have expressed interest in signing 33-year-old Billy Sharp from Sheffield United. The Blades are having a great season at the moment and currently sit at eight in the Premier League table. This is remarkable considering that this is their first season back in the top division of English football since 2006/07.

One person who has got lost in the shuffle though is Billy Sharp. After scoring 23 goals in the Championship last season to fire the Blades to promotion, the 33-year-old has started only one Premier League game this season. And with Oliver McBurnie, Lys Mousset, Callum Robinson and David McGoldrick already at Bramall Lane, the club might be looking to move the striker on in January.

One problem with Sharp is his size. Celtic have lost out the physical battle with the Rangers twice in a row now. And it is hard to see how they could turn that around by signing a 5′ 7″ striker who has not played much football this season.

Celtic’s interest in the striker is not surprising though. Sharp has proven himself to be a reliable goalscorer over the past several seasons and it was not too long ago that he was terrorising defences in the English Championship. With brilliant finishing and good hold-up play, he will be a shrewd addition to the squad. And at 33 years of age, Sheffield United would not be asking for much either.
