Opinion: Mohamed Elyounoussi is an absolute bargain at £9 million

Since the inflation of the transfer market a few years back with the mega money move of Brazilian superstar, Neymar, from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain, it has become incredibly hard to get top quality talent at a reasonable price. Thus, it is a huge surprise that Celtic can potentially sign Mohamed Elyounoussi for as little as £9 million.

Now, £9 million is not a small sum of money by any means. In fact, paying that sum would mean that Celtic equal their all-time record for transfer fee paid, which is when they signed Odsonne Edouard from Paris Saint-Germain for the same figure back in 2018. But it is very difficult to find a player like Mohamed Elyounoussi for anything less than 8-figures in the present market and he will be an absolute steal at that price.

As reported by the Daily Record:

‘Celtic could land winger Mohamed Elyounoussi on a permanent deal if they are willing to match the £9m they splashed out on Odsonne Edouard in June 2018.

‘Record Sport understands fears that the Norwegian international would be out of the Hoops’ price range are unfounded and that a deal to secure Elyounoussi from Southampton remains a possibility.

‘Reports had claimed that the English Premier League side paid Basel £16 million to sign the winger back in 2018, but the actual figure is understood to be £12m plus add-ons, which are unlikely to be hit unless Elyounoussi forces his way back into the Southampton team.’

Elyounoussi has scored 7 goals and provided 6 assists in 13 appearances this season. That is a huge upturn from his previous season at Southampton when he could neither find the back of the net nor set up any of his teammates. And he is easily the best option that Celtic have at left-wing right now. Currently, the Norwegian is recovering from injury and has not featured much over the past two months. But when fit, he has shown himself to be a magnificent player and the board should not think twice before snapping him up if he is indeed available at the reported price.
