Opinion Celtic are taking a huge gamble by replacing Forster with Barkas

Nobody really knew what to expect from Fraser Forster when he came back to Celtic last summer, but his performances have left Celtic with a huge problem going forward.

You never realise how important a top quality keeper is until after one leaves and a replacement is needed, and it looks like Celtic are going to turn to Greek international Vasilos Barkas to fill the void.

The Glasgow times reported that Celtic are closing in on a £4.5m move for the AEK Athens keeper, but a look at his history shows this is one almighty gamble.

Despite his age of 26, he’s played in less than 100 league games and he’s only been a true starter in his last two seasons, so it shows he lacks experience.

He does have the positive of playing for the national team 10 times, but the current Greece set up is miles away from the historic European Championship winning side.

The truth is that it’s almost impossible to tell how good he’s going to be – and that’s the gamble for Celtic. He does have a league winner’s medal with AEK but he barely played that season, while Champions League experience is sparse too.

There are things to like about his game – he looks dominant in the air, he’s good at making saves with his feet and his reflexes look pretty sharp too.

It’s a big ask for him to step up and adapt in such a historic season for Celtic, so let’s hope he’s able to do that and the gamble pays off.
