Opinion: Celtic blew their last chance to sign Victor Wanyama

Following their defeat at the hands of the Rangers before heading into the winter break, Celtic were expected to make a major splash in the January transfer window. But as the month comes to a close, it is safe to say that no splash was made.

The club managed to bring in Patryk Klimala and Ismaila Soro, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of holes still remain in the squad. And with the continuous injuries that the players have suffered this season and nine-in-a-row hanging by a thread, the board’s casual approach to this window is alarming indeed.

One man who has been linked with the club for so long is Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan made a name for himself at Celtic Park before moving on to the Premier League. But having fallen out of favour at Tottenham, fans have wanted the club to bring him back for quite a while. Now though it looks like that transfer is not going to transpire in this window either with the clock quickly ticking down. And it is hard not to feel that the club have blown their last opportunity to bring Wanyama back to Parkhead.

Jose Mourinho is the man in charge at Tottenham right now, and the Portuguese has had a reputation for letting players leave. After all, he let go of players like Kevin de Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Mohamed Salah. Certainly he would not be sweating over Wanyama’s departure, someone who has not featured regularly for the club over the last two-and-a-half seasons.

So, if Celtic have not managed to bring Wanyama back even now, fans should just stop expecting him to return ever again.
