Opinion: Celtic should consider La Liga goalkeeper to replace Vasilis Barkas

Celtic should look to sign La Liga goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco as the club look to rebuild after a poor season. Vasilis Barkas was signed from AEK Athens but he failed to live up to the £4.5m price-tag and now Celtic are being tipped to enter the transfer market for a new goalkeeper.

A number of keepers have been linked with Tom Heaton, Benjamin Siegrist and David Marshall; however, one player that Celtic should consider is Deportivo Alaves’ Fernando Pacheco.

Pacheco represents the higher end of Celtic’s price bracket with the Basque side reportedly open to selling the ‘keeper for £8.5m. Alaves sit 16th in La Liga and will be looking to preserve their status in the league, which is hanging in the balance with just a one point lead over relegation-placed sides below them.

The former Real Madrid prospect has been incredible this season and has won many plaudits for his performances in goals but also in leading the team, as captain. Celtic have appeared rudderless in defence at times this season with goals being conceded far too frequently.

The 28-year-old has over 200 appearances for Deportivo Alaves since moving in 2015 with them in the second division but handled the transition to La Liga with ease as they maintained their place in the top tier.

He would likely cost Celtic around £8m if Alaves retain their place in La Liga yet if they fall into the second division, there might be an opportunity for the club to sign an outstanding goalkeeper to rebuild ahead of next season.
