Pat Bonner believes Celtic star may take pay cut to stay at Parkhead

It is safe to say Pat Bonner knows a thing or two about standing between the sticks at Parkhead. The Irish goalkeeper spent 20 years at Celtic and went on to make 642 appearances for the club. And the legend believes that Celtic’s current number one in goal, Fraser Forster, may take a pay cut to stay at the club.

Forster is currently on a season-long loan at Celtic from Southampton. And he has been absolutely immense since his return to the club, almost single-handedly winning them the Scottish League Cup against the Rangers earlier this season. That is a huge upturn for the Englishman, who has spent the last two seasons of his career stagnating on the Premier League side’s bench. Now the big question is whether Celtic can sign Forster permanently at the end of the season.

Pat Bonner believes that the key to that deal lies in Forster agreeing to take a pay cut. The former Celtic goalkeeper told The Scotsman:

“The grass is not always greener somewhere else. Now, of course, Fraser is on big money with Southampton. It’s incredible money players get down south and it’s hard to know if Celtic could even afford to take him for half his money.

“Possibly not, but he seems to be happy at Celtic. He’s made his money and is this the place for him to spend the rest of his career? To finish his playing days at a club which he enjoys?”

It is no secret that Celtic do not have the capability to pay their stars as much as the uber-rich Premier League sides. The Englishman is reported to be on over 70,000 per week and thus it is no surprise that it could be a stumbling block for the Hoops if they want to reach any permanent deal with Southampton for the goalkeeper.
