Peter Lawwell calls for more action against racism in football

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell has called for more to be done to combat racism in football. The long-standing CEO, who will leave the club in the summer, has been at the helm as a number of players and officials have been subjected to sickening racist abuse. The club has called for more to be done in the wake of each of these instances but Lawwell reiterated the need for abuse to be stamped out of the game in an SFA summit.

Speaking to the official club website, Lawwell said that more needed to be done regarding all kinds of abuse at all clubs.

“Unfortunately, across many years, numerous Celtic players and staff have been subjected to various forms of racism and discrimination”.
“Whether it relates to Celtic or any other club, it is time it stopped. Racism or any other form of discrimination should have no place in football or society and we need to do all we can to eradicate such prejudice.”
“As a Club open to all since 1888 we will continue to do all we can to promote this hugely important message and we look forward to working with other clubs and the wider football authorities to tackle this issue.”

Social media has become a hive for abusive behaviour being directed to a number of footballers and other high profile targets. Neil Lennon, Scott Sinclair, Scott Brown and Shane Duffy are just some of the recent recipients of abuse from supporters and enough is enough.

The footballing authorities need to do more in order to protect players and pressure social media channels into doing more. Scott Brown showed his class during the warm up of the recent Glasgow Derby kick-off against Rangers by crossing into the opposition half and showing solidarity with Glen Kamara. The 25-year-old midfielder for the Ibrox outfit was distraught following a racist comment from Slavia Prague’s Ondrej Kudela.

Brown shook Kamara’s hand and embraced him, resulting in a brilliant picture of solidarity against racism, bigotry and sectarianism.

Celtic stand against all forms of bigotry, racism and sectarianism and it was pleasing to see Scott Brown represent the club in showing that it is unacceptable.
