Photo: Celtic and Rangers supporters make Sydney Cup feelings clear

Celtic and Rangers fans have united in their displeasure at the clubs agreeing to play a friendly in Australia later this year. The Glasgow rivals will meet in the Sydney Cup in November as teams enjoy a break during the World Cup, which is due to take place in Qatar this winter.

However, both sets of fans are unhappy that the fixture is being commercialised in this manner. Ahead of tonight’s game against St Mirren, The Green Brigade unveiled a banner (above) that mocked the Celtic ‘We’re Not Half of Anything’ tagline that they adopted last year in the wake of Rangers fans destroying George Square.

Meanwhile, Rangers, who will make up the numbers as part of Postecoglou’s homecoming tour, face fierce opposition from their fans. Their fans unveiled a banner in Perth this evening saying ‘MONEY OVER MORALS, NO DERBY FRIENDLIES’.

The move is said to net Celtic more money than prize money from winning the Cinch Premiership. Whilst their Glasgow rivals are said to earn less, the decision has left a sour taste in the mouth of many as it appears that the club are willing to entertain the rivalry on a commercial basis. Likewise, Rangers are happy to benefit from Celtic playing abroad but are unwilling to reinstate the allocation.
