Photo Of The Day: Celtic Fans In Lisbon 2006

Today’s photo of the day continues with a European theme as it shows Celtic fans in Lisbon ahead of the Champions League group stage clash with Benfica in 2006. It was a re-run of 1969 as Celtic lost 3-0 in Portugal, having already beaten the Eagles 3-0 in the reverse fixture.

Many thousands of Celtic fans made the trip, some making the pilgrimage to Estadio Nacional where the Lisbon Lions won the European Cup. Such a visit would become a regular part of the Celtic calendar as the Hoops drew Benfica the following season and again in 2012.

Despite being defeated, the Celtic faithful were in great spirits at full time.
