Celtic are being linked with a move for George Baldock, two years after the club were initially linked with the English right-back. Baldock, 28, excelled as a wingback under Chris Wilder and attracted interest from Paradise back in 2019 which appears to have been reignited as the club search for a new option after Jeremie Frimpong left in January.
According to The Star, a Sheffield publication, Celtic are said to believe that current market conditions mean that they can get a knock-down price for Baldock, paying between £5-8m for the player. This is quite an outlay even if it is a markdown but COVID-19 and United’s relegation could allow the club to nip in and offer the player the prospect at playing in a new league with silverware and European football acting as a carrot to entice him across the border.
Sheffield United are said to value him more than this but in English market conditions, some ridiculous fees are thrown about – especially The Blades who paid over £20m for Oli McBurnie. Celtic will likely have a number of options that are more used to playing in an attacking team and available at a fraction of the price.
It would be surprising if Celtic signed Baldock due to the figures that are mentioned in the report and he certainly doesn’t fit the kind of signing Celtic have made in the past. However, he operated predominately as a right wingback for Wilder and this allowed him to attack but also be relied upon to get back when need be.
