Rod Stewart reckons Ange Postecoglou is on par with Jock Stein

Rod Stewart has emphatically declared that Celtic boss, Ange Postecoglou is the equal of legendary Hoops manager, Jock Stein. This comes after the rocker was interviewed on talkSPORT this week with Jim White – and the Faces signed even pokes fun at the bluenose host over Sunday’s League Cup Final win against theRangers.

Stewart, 78, is a avid fan of the Bhoys and is always cutting about at the games – especially the big occasions. Well, this week was no different, as the Maggie May singer was clocked having a laugh with some supporters in the stands at Hampden Park last weekend as the Parkhead side scooped up the first piece of silverware of the season against our fierce rivals.

Following this marker for the rest of the campaign, he appeared on the morning show to talk Celtic and declared that for his money, Ange is as good as any of the Celtic greats; including the imperious, European Cup-winning Jock Stein.

He said: “Ange is up there with Martin O’Neill, Neil Lennon and Jock Stein, all of them. He better stick around and I think he will. He won’t just go off and dump us to manage any team he wants to manage in the Premiership.”

In a couple of bold statements, he added that not only would Postecoglou be sticking around for the long-haul at Celtic Park, but he emphatically announced that the Greek-Aussie is on a par with our legendary manager, Stein.

He enthused: “He’s going to stick around and cause you lots of heartache. He’s up there with Jock Stein In my money, yeah. He turned this team around so quickly and bought new players so astutely and it has worked. It’s Angeball.”

After White praised the Celtic man’s charitable work for an event they were both involved in, Rod the Mod Took aim at English football and it’s supporters for slagging off the Hoops and Scottish football more generally vis-a-vis European results – pointing to Liverpool’s recent battering at the hands of Real Madrid at Anfield.

He said: “Let me tell you, I know you’re a bluenose and I watched the game back in the cold light of day and you were in it. There were a couple of chances Rangers had and you know Old Firm (sic) games can turn on a dime but you missed them.

“We know we can’t give the money for the big players in Europe so I think Celtic will do well. Everyone laughs when Celtic get beat by Real Madrid but they just pumped Liverpool. I love Celtic and Scottish football.”

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
