Rodgers won 11 trophies from 13, an elite level stat right there

Nancyball or Wilfball is worse than the nineties, Lenny’s Covidball, Barnes, and Mowbray. Change my mind if you can…

I’ve seen plenty of poor Celtic sides in my 45 years on the planet, from the dark days of the early 90s, to the disastrous John Barnes era that came to a halt at the start of this century. The diabolical Tony Mowbray season, and the more recent Neil Lennon’s jinxed Covid campaign, all were painful and totally forgettable eras, but not a patch on the present side under the leadership of the inept and out of his depth Wilfried Nancy.

At least in the early 1990s we had the excuse of lagging behind a Rangers (1872, RIP) side who were spending well beyond their means, and we had a structure to how we played, boasting some terrific talents such as Paul McStay and John Collins.

The same could be said of the Barnes era. We at least were winning games, bolstered by players such as Henrik Larsson and Lubo Moravcik. Likewise the sides of Brady and Macari, they had some sort of structure, and highlights to recall, even if moral wasn’t exactly at an all time high, we still had a beacon of hope to cling on to. And we knew in the early 1990s that Celtic were skint, unlike this current lot who are running our club into the ground while sitting on a cash pile of around £80m.

Mowbray’s time was a little more substandard, but again we could compete and had a structure and rhythm to our play, it was a dire time as his foreseeable demise would tell, but still behind the current side in terms of bleakness and lack of confidence. Mowbray’s time was up after a disjointed, dreadful performance away to St Mirren that resulted in a 4-0 defeat. Celtic in the second half yesterday reminded me of that game.

Lenny’s infamous Covidball was the stuff of terrible nightmares. A team led by a man who was out of ideas, and streets behind the tribute act from Ibrox who revelled in the strange era of pressure free empty stadia as supporters were locked out due to a global pandemic. Celtic supporters incidentally paid our season tickets in full knowing we would not see a game. Had we not than that cash mountain the club currently has resting in their PLC account would be significantly lower.  In hindsight we as a support should have pushed for a share-issue at that time to fund the club through Covid.

In that again we had the reasonable excuse of an uncertain times plaguing the world as a whole, something our current crop of players clearly don’t have. They do have plenty of injuries in a squad that has key weaknesses thanks to the incompetence offer board led by CEO Michael Nicholson who has brought in a rookie manager and given him Johnny Kenny and Shin Yamada as his strike force.  Nicholson has had two consecutive mares in transfer window dealings in terns of signing players but he’ll happily gift wrap up anyone who is subject to a juicy bid and ship them out the door.  World class in everything he does,  that one.

Nancy has lost six of his eight matches in charge, including a cup final. His current win percentage of 25.00 is the lowest of all the previous poor fore mentioned regimes. Brady boasted a win percentage of 56.90 and lost a total of 24 games in charge, about an average of eight a campaign which Nancy is on course to level after just six weeks in charge.

Lou Macari
Lou Macari

Macari in his short time holds a win percentage of 35.3 and lost eight games in a six month period, again something Nancy is on course to surpass after a much shorter period.

Barnes with a win percentage of 65.51 and lost just eight games in the same period as Macari. Mowbray had a 51.11 and 13 losses in a seven month period, again not as drastic as Nancy.

Lennon in the Covid campaign lost just ten games, only four in the league, a total Nancy has matched already. So the stats clearly speak for themselves.

As bad as the teams were under the leadership of Brady, Macari, Barnes, Mowbray and Lennon, we were never engulfed in such direness and negativity on the park, the sort that plagues us currently. The Celtic support will not accept this manager we’ve had enough of this board led by Nicholson and McKay. They should all do the honourable thing and resign. But they won’t.

A few short months ago we were debating on here, what an elite manager is and if Brendan Rodgers merits that classification. Wilfried Nancy has showed us what a rookie manager looks like, well below elite level. Sometimes is wise to be careful what you wish for.

Rodgers won 11 trophies from 13 in charge of Celtic. That’s an elite level stat right there.

An ordinary everyday Celtic supporters hailing and still residing in Govan in the shadows of the enemy. I’m a season ticket holder. I Witnessed my first Celtic game in 1988 and have attended when I can ever since. Growing up in the 90s I witnessed Celtic at their lowest, and now appreciate the historic success we enjoy today. I enjoy writing about this wonderful football club and hopefully will continue to do so. I’ve always been a keen writer and initially started this a hobby. My ambition is to one day become as good an author as my fellow Celtic Star colleagues.

  1. Anthony Mcquade on

Why would anyone want to try and change your mind . ?

    Facts are facts .

The most serious point in all this is that the MANAGER is not open to change .

It his way or the HIGHWAY!

Hopefully HE be on that highway soon 🍀

  2. Over 65 years supporting Celtic I have seen some shite but nothing as bad as what’s happening now.

  3. The bible tells us that pride goeth before the fall. First pride – then the crash. And the bigger the ego. the Harder the fall. Proverbs 16:18

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

The Celtic directors have massive egos. They are on the gravy train. Almost immovable. They let pride get in the way with their attack on Rodgers publically.

The fall is coming. But change can happen and happen very quicky. The directors need to give the fans something back. Sacking Nancy and restoring club legend O’Neill. Apologising for the results on the park. Announcing a change of leadership in the board and in transfer strategy. Offering concessions to fans. Free pre-season football game on the season ticket. Freezing prices for next season. Announcing a long term strategy for a large standing section at Celtic Park in the Jock Stein Stand to modernise the match day experience.

And success will bring us together. Old but Gold. Let O’Neill and Sean Maloney help us fight for a league title and god bless the Pope’s 11.

    Hail Hail!

  4. As for the Green Brigade. They are an unpalatable bunch of extreme communist left wing woke liberals. I loath their politics.

But I would let them back into Celtic Park. As they live and breath Celtic and give them another chance. Forgiveness will go along way. And you can shake the hand of the man that’s done you wrong. As we need to come together as a football club and there’s too many factional infightings.

Change can happen. And can happen very quickly.

Sack this clown Nancy tonight. And let’s win this league!

    • Exactly how I feel about you David, and you’re woke bandwagon of the right, try thinking for your self, does wonders.
I do wish people would stop holding up O’Neil as the messiah, yes he came in and did what was required, his trademark man management evident to all, but he was very lucky to escape a 50% win rate, with some truly dire performances, and game saving single late goals, holding on to results with a good dose of luck. The players looked just as fallible under O’Neil as they had with Rogers, ill equipped and barely up to the task. With a shit manager like Nancy, all their faults and the faults of the squad ,are plain to see.

    • As for you David, I abhor your disgusting politics and id give you a lifetime ban for being a fanny

  5. Your obviously working stats upon a totally different meaning, to what I would say is elite manager status?

Can’t be bothered to take a look at the stats of Rodgers European record for ourselves?
But confident enough to claim it is littered with far more embarrassing defeats, than memorable victories, and just how many away victories, within how many attempts?
The results would make a nonsense of elite manager claims imo?

If we are going to stick at Scottish football levels, then fair enough?
Yet that doesn’t require an elite manager to win so much lately, in Scottish football, with the prestige name and cash reserves available within it imo?

Now even that is under threat now, with such a calamity unfolding.
Don’t believe Nancy is the right appointment as manager, to solve the ongoing issues.

When Rodgers was no longer able to get the performance levels required for ourselves, then little to no chance of Nancy getting them?
The MoN and Maloney stabilised things, with getting results, and a bit of improvement within the performance levels of players, even if still lacking in players capabilities imo?

Hopefully we can attract a manager, prepared to undertake the rebuild that’s required?
Don’t believe Nancy is the right manager to do so, especially now.
Doubtful even MoN would want to oversee the current situation either imo?

We possibly require a manager, with a track record of developing players, even more so now.
Nowhere close to becoming a respected European team again, as things stand, and would only be cannon fodder within CL. Even europa league is looking beyond ourselves at present also.

Alarming just how quickly it all has declined, and no longer interested in the blame game as to why?

This is about finding solutions to an unacceptable situation, that has developed so quickly also.
This month alone, offers a chance of putting right, some of the wrongs that has gone on beforehand and looking like are still in operation at present?

Don’t expect everything to get resolved in January, but surely there has to be improvements upon the decision making process, which is currently brutal imo?
