The vacant managerial post at Celtic has caused numerous rumours to circulate. The bookies have slashed odds on Roy Keane becoming the boss, Jesse Marsch has been very outspoken about his suitability for the role, whilst Alex McLeish has now said that he’s heard rumours regarding Frank Lampard being in discussion with the club’s board.
Lampard has been out of work since January when he was sacked by Chelsea. The Englishman had a great playing career, and did a good job as Derby County boss, which earned him the managerial position at Chelsea. His time at Stamford Bridge began well and then went downhill in the latter stages of his tenure.
McLeish told Football Insider: “I’m hearing whispers that Frank Lampard was seen with the Celtic directors. No matter what, the rumour mill will continue to thrive until an appointment is finally made. I think the fans would love a big name. There’s no doubt about it, they’ll be looking for that kind of personality.”
Celtic supporters know that names alone won’t win anything. Fans have widely been hoping for a vision and forward thinking appointment. McLeish touched on that point:
“Saying that, they would also crave a coach in the style of Brendan Rodgers. The modern-day coach per se, not the managerial type situation. I know Brendan’s a great man-manager as well so he’s got all the attributes. If they could seek a new, young, Brendan Rodgers protege perhaps.
“Although, Brendan did get good support from the Celtic board in terms of spending and stuff and bringing in some players to fit his system. They would probably be looking at all aspects.”
