Celtic linked to Jesse Marsch’s Uefa Pro Licence – “Celtic sponsored me to be on the course”

The Jesse Marsch interview on BBC Sportsound this evening was intriguing and brought in some new information about the RB Salzburg’s manager’s relationship with Celtic. In the interview Marsch reveals that Celtic sponsored him on his coaching course to receive his Uefa Pro Licence.

The 47 year-old is the perfect candidate for Celtic if we are looking at modernising the football operation and looking at a complete structural rebuild of the club’s football department from top to bottom. He fits the bill for the kind of coach that Celtic need in the modern game.

After hearing from Marsch the Sportsound panelists – Chick Young and the Motherwell coach Maurice Ross – discussed what they’d heard and could not have been further apart in their assessment of the RB Salzburg manager. Veteran broadcaster Young was old school, dealing in generalisations and ignoring data and the modern coaching methods that are essential while Ross, the ex-Rangers player, couldn’t believe what he was hearing saying that Celtic would be making a brilliant appointment if they could entice Marsch to Paradise.

And the Celtic link revealed tonight may just have opened the door a little more than some lapdogs were saying today. Maybe, just maybe…

“I wanted to further my education as well as trying to qualify myself to be a coach in Europe. I had taken my badges in the US but I needed to be educated in Europe,” Marsch told BBC Scotland Sportsound.

“Red Bull had a relationship with Scotland and specifically Celtic. Celtic sponsored me to be on the course. I took the course from 2018 to the end of 2019.

“It was very difficult and stressful for me because I had to often fly over on a Saturday night directly after our game on a red eye, and then go straight from the airport to the course.

“That lasted eight, nine hours that day. Get a little bit of sleep that night and then wake up on the Monday morning and go through the course again, and sometimes Tuesday as well, and then fly back and coach my team. I did that probably 15 times.

“What I learned, not just about Scottish football but Scottish people, was how welcoming they were of me, how open they were to the ideas that I had. There was a strong sense of togetherness within the course that I found unique and special, and frankly something that when I took my courses in the US, wasn’t quite as strong.

“I enjoyed the instructors, the other students and the overall experience. Jack Ross was on the course with me, I thought he was really good. Martin Canning was on the course with me.”

“Over the years I’ve known a lot about Celtic and specifically Celtic-Rangers and the Old Firm (sic).

“I knew Mo Johnston (!!!) in the MLS, played against him, I know him personally. I’ve spoken to him about his experiences at Celtic and Rangers. I heard some incredible stories.

“Then obviously when I spent the two years on the course there, I really got the sense as to what an important club Celtic is inside Scotland, and what it means to the people of Glasgow.”
